Keynote Speaker | FELIPE DE JESUS | Indigenous Peoples in Mexico: A Terrorized Community
"The Loxicha case is an extreme example of the Mexican government's alarming treatment of indigenous communities in Oaxaca and elsewhere in Mexico, where impunity reigns, and militarization and grotesque violations of human rights continue unchecked. Especially since September 11th, 2001, military cooperation among the member countries of NAFTA including Canada- is being scaled up." + more

In a climate of growing global economic hegemony and rapid changes in human existence and interconnectedness, the IFH 2002 addresses six focus areas (see below) - international law, technology, environment, social inequality, identity and conflict, and the powers of the media and marketing - which guide our desire to reconsider the way our world is built, to question the compromises we have accepted, and to examine the whys of our choices.

| 6 Focus Areas |
Seeing incidences of conflict mount between and within nations around the world, we investigate to what extent ongoing ethnic conflicts are a modern 20th century product of the colonization and the subsequent decolonization of the developing world. + more

Amid increasing examples of unequal distribution of technology, coupled with an emerging rhetoric that defines progress solely in technological and scientific terms, we confront the role that technology and science play in our ever expanding and specializing world by assessing the value we individually place on humanity and progress. + more

The environment is often
seen only as a commodity to be exploited for profitable gain. We recognize
how the earth's finite natural resources are being entangled in a politicized
battle for jurisdictional rights and examine the volatile nature of environmental
policies among governments of the 21st century. +

The emergence of a world-domineering super power like the USA and the deterioration of international regulating organizations over the past fifty years, such as the UN and NATO, leads us to question the legitimacy of these governing bodies, their accountability in international politics, and their future role in global human affairs. +more

Given the limited and often biased perspective of popular media and its profound ability to influence public opinion and attitude, we question the validity of mainstream media-fed news and promote seeking alternative information sources to form our opinions | Introducing the "G" Logo Campaign - a marketing experiment. + more

Given the conflicts between a dominating liberal economic philosophy and world realities, we discuss how to create a world of justice. We aim to bring our world realities into focus, highlighting the inconsistencies between the values we claim and the realities we accept by presenting a series of powerful venues that will shatter the safety of apathy and instil a commitment to change. + more
