Bahramitash | Women's Employment in Iran: modernization and Islamisation
In the year 2000, in the Holy city of Mashhad--a major site of Shi'a pilgrimage--more than a hundred women started working as taxi drivers--one of the most male-dominated professions in the world. Trained in martial arts, carrying cellular phones, and still wearing their veils, these women work night shifts regularly, protected through a central dispatch office.
