ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Project, an international student organization based out of McGill University, encourages discussion, critical thought and action regarding social, political, economic, and/or environmental issues of local, national, and international relevance. The Project recognizes the value of diverse political opinions as being crucial in the process of questioning the world in which we live.

Our ultimate goal is to manage an international network of knowledgeable and motivated youth, increasing and promoting both local and global awareness. The Project attempts to accomplish this goal by networking existing organizations and individuals in order to execute effective, creative, and at times controversial community level initiatives around the globe.

THE PROJECT - 2001/2002 Initiatives

Beneath the Veil Speaker Series (co-organized by the Muslim Student's Association)

The focus of the speaker series is uncovering the reality of women practicing Islam. Practicing religion is a choice and we believe it is important to hear the stories and beliefs of Muslim women in order to reveal the truth fo the faith in comparison to its portrayal in popular media. The purpose of our speaker series is to explore the different aspects of the Islamic faith and its practices through the views of practicing women from various backgrounds. Monday, February 4th in Leacock 26, 7PM

"If one has been 'trained' in the ways of poverty, left no opportunity to do other than react to his or her environment, what is needed is a beginning, not repetition," Earl Shorris said in an interview last year. "The humanities teach us to think reflectively, to begin, to deal with the new as it occurs to us, to dare. If the multi-generational poor are to make the leap out of poverty, it will require a new kind of thinking-reflection. And that is a beginning." + more
